Cleanse, Exfoliate & Moisturize Before Applying Foundation!

Want to make your base makeup look smooth and flawless?! Then cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize your face before going in with your foundation. Cleansing and exfoliation will get rid of any dead or dry skin cells on your skin. Proper moisturization will ensure that the foundation glides on smoothly on your skin. After moisturizer, you can also use a primer, but it’s optional.

Let Your Skin Absorb The Moisturizer

If you apply the foundation right after you have applied the moisturizer, then your foundation will just slide off easily. So wait for 4-5 minutes and let the moisturizer sink into your skin before applying your foundation.

Pair Your Primer & Foundation Rightly

Here are the types of primers and foundations that should be paired with each other –

  • Oil based primer with oil based foundation.
  • Water based primer with water based foundation. (Usually mentioned as oil free primer/foundation)
  • Silicone based primer with silicone based foundation. (Main ingredient usually Dimethicone)

Apply Your Foundation On Your Neck & Jawline As Well

Some people don’t agree with this rule because they say that you’re supposed to match your face with your neck and not vice versa. It’s OK if you don’t want to apply the foundation on your neck, you do you! But apply and blend it on your jawline to make it look more natural.

Apply Concealer In A Triangular Shape

You are probably aware of this rule already. Here’s a pro tip for people with round or square face – take the Concealer further downwards (but not too below your nose) to give your face a more elongated look. I have created this chart above to help you understand it better.

Set Your Concealer & Foundation With A Loose Powder / Compact Powder

Set your concealer and foundation with powder so that they won’t crease! Also set your cream contour with a bronzer or a powder contour.

Always use a matte brown eyeshadow on your crease as a transition shade before going in with other colours. The transition shade helps to blend all the colours together nicely.

Even if you are going for a natural eye makeup look, you should still apply a shimmery eyeshadow/highlighter to the inner corner of your eyes to make them appear brighter and more awake! I tried this and noticed that it makes a lot of difference in my overall makeup look.

Line Your Lips Before Applying A Lipstick

Lip liners not only define your natural lip shape, but also increase your lipstick’s wear time and prevent it from feathering or bleeding outside the lips. Outline your lips with a lip liner that matches with your lipstick shade and then fill in the whole lips. Some brands like Rimmel have universal or transparent lip liners which go with all the lipstick shades. You can check out the Rimmel Moisture Renew Universal Transparent Lip Liner on Nykaa.

Spend Time In Blending Everything

Unblended makeup doesn’t look that attractive, does it? So spend some time in blending everything out to get rid of any harsh lines. Another tip is to be light handed while picking up blush/contour/eyeshadows on brushes. You can always build up the pigmentation later, but if you end up placing a lot of product at once, the blending process will become super hard and time consuming.

Avoid Using Makeup Products That Contain Talc

Talc can make you look like a ghost in flash photography! It’s not photo-friendly because it’s reflective. Mostly, loose face powders and compact powders contain this ingredient.

Keep Your Makeup Brushes And Sponges Clean

Makeup brushes and sponges/beauty blenders can accumulate dust and bacterias over time. Try to wash them as often as you can. The easiest way to wash them is by using a brush egg.

Don’t Apply Matte Lipstick If Your Lips Are Dry & Flaky

Matte lipstick can make your dry and flaky lips look worse. Actually, forget about the look.. it will feel so uncomfortable on lips that you will be annoyed with it! Whenever I plan to wear a matte lipstick, I start doing my makeup by applying a lip balm first. In that way, my lips get moisturized and hydrated while I’m doing the rest of my makeup. Once I am done with that, I take a tissue and blot the lip balm before applying the matte lipstick.

During winters, I recommend using creamy matte lipsticks like Revlon Matte Lipstick.

Don’t Over-Draw Your Eyebrows

Bold eyebrows are very much in trends this year. Many people overdraw their eyebrows instead of following their natural brow shape. You can overdraw the beginning and the end of your eyebrows if you want to, but for the arch, you should go with the natural shape. To find out where exactly your arch should be, just take a long pencil and angle it along the bridge of your nose across your eye’s pupil. Blend the eyebrow product inwards to avoid harsh lines which may look unnatural.

These were all the makeup rules that I feel, can help you to do your makeup in a better way. Everyone has their own way of doing makeup so please don’t be offended by this post! I hope that the makeup beginners find it helpful and informative. If you do, then please share it with your friends, It will encourage me to write more such posts.
