In the classic Nora Ephron-penned 1986 film “Heartburn,” directed by Mike Nichols, there’s a titular scene. But, for those who do not remember — New York writer Rachel Samstat (Meryl Streep), pregnant and mother to a toddler, is living with her father after she left her cheating husband, Mark Forman (Jack Nicholson). While on the subway, she notices an unsavory sort nearby, and she twists her diamond engagement inward, towards her palm. Despite her best efforts, when she reaches her destination, group therapy, the guy on the subway robs each of the patients in the group, including Rachel. She very reluctantly gives up her ring to the thieves. As he departs, he says, “I’m really sorry about your ring, lady,” to which Rachel replies, “It’s all right.”

It is an incident that has oft been repeated in New York City (robbery), but the ring is central to the story as it represents her failing and flailing marriage. The movie opens with the couple meeting both cute and quickly and covers the wedding when the ring makes its first appearance. Later, when the NYPD actually catch the robber, much to her surprise, she gets her ring back, only to discover the stone is loose. When Rachel takes it to her jeweller to be fixed, only to discover her husband purchased an expensive necklace for his lover (who he has clearly not given up, despite his fervent promises). This epiphany spurs Rachel to sell her ring, thus having enough money to forge out on her own.

Now that we’ve reminded you of the funny but bittersweet movie of more than 30 (!) years ago, you might also be reminded how vulnerable a tiny piece of jewellery – such as a ring – can be. It’s important that you fully insure your precious jewellery, notably, your engagement and wedding ring as these are pieces of jewellery you’re likely to wear daily and are likely to represent an investment for a newlywed couple.

Having your ring insured will give you or your fiancé peace-of-mind. You’ll be able to wear the valuable, sentimental precious piece of jewellery daily, and know that you will be covered should something (God forbid!) happen to it. Look for your diamond engagement ring at a shop that will not only cater to your every need and question, but has a great online shop that makes perusing and ruminating over your choice easy, any time of the day. One good example for that is http://diamondqueensland.com.au/.

A diamond engagement rings holds so much relevance in your life. It is a daily reminder of your bond. It is a marked investment in your future as a married couple. It has the ultimate sentimental value, because it is an iconic symbol as well as one that is of significant financial investment.

Jewellery insurance in Australia is available and will allow you to go back to your original jeweller. Purchasing insurance is not something to be taken for granted. Despite your natural instinct to be budget conscious, be sure your rings are insured at the correct value. A jeweller will typically insure your ring at the price you purchased the ring. However, assessors may have a different value based on their calculations and methodologies.

Don’t become a statistic which show that most Australians don’t keep records of their jewellery purchases, in case of loss or theft. They’re also not often fully aware of the true value of their jewellery. If you were lucky enough to get a quality diamond at a wholesale rate, your ring is likely much more valuable than the price you paid. Secure your jewellery for your heirs – and have peace of mind.
