I have mentioned a lot of times in my earlier posts that makeup isn’t bound to any rules. You can experiment with whichever shade of lipstick you like, but there are certain shades which compliment only certain skin tones and undertones.

If you have ever been in a situation where you spent a hundred bucks on a trendy lipstick shade that you saw your favourite beauty guru wearing and when you applied it, it just didn’t look that flattering on you – then it is probably due to the shade not matching with your skintone and undertone. Here is an easy guide which will help you to choose a lipstick shade according to your skin tone + under tone!

⇨ Lipstick shades for Fair Skin Tone with Cool/Neutral Undertone – Beige and Blue Toned Red.

2. Toss Your Glosses & Cream Finish Lipsticks During Summers & Use Matte Lipsticks!

Lip glosses or lipsticks with creamy finishes can feather and melt away really fast during the summer season due to excessive heat!

Summer season is the best time to rock matte lipsticks as they have high staying power and they are usually feather proof. If you are a matte liquid lipstick lover then you can go for the SUGAR Smudge Me Not range or the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink range, those are not that good at applying liquid lipsticks precisely (just like me!), can try the Maybelline Colorsensational Lip Gradation range.

If you live in India, You can also give a try to the ultra-cheap Elle 18 Matte lipsticks, but since they are not 100% matte, you will have to use a tissue paper and compact powder to achieve a matte look with them.

3. Don’t Match Your Lipstick With The Colour Of Your Outfit

This is a common makeup blunder which we all have made and probably, still do. Matching your lipstick with your outfit’s colour may not look that bad, but it will be better if you go for a colour that “compliments” your outfit and not “match”. There are a couple of versatile lip shades that would go with most of your outfits, like a neutral red and pink toned nude.

4. Got Small Lips? Avoid Wearing Dark Lip Shades With Matte Finish!

I know I mentioned that you should go for matte lipsticks in the summers, but on small lips, applying a dark matte lipstick may not be a good idea.

Dark lip shades make small lips look even smaller. My upper lip is smaller than my lower lip so matte liquid lipsticks look a bit awkward on me unless I over line them. The best option we makeup lover with smaller lips should go for is a lip gloss, or maybe the now-trending metallic liquid lipsticks! Lip glosses and metallic lipsticks make the lips look pouty and plumpy.

Metallic lipsticks are not easily available in India, most of the brands are yet to launch them here. But I recently spotted Australis Metallic lipsticks and I feel they are worth the try! I am not planning to get my hands on them as of now because I am not bold enough to wear metallic lips. Although, these Australis Lipsticks look very subtle and they are pretty much inexpensive at Rs.600/-. L.A. Girl and MUA too have collections of metallic lipsticks called Metal Liquid Lipsticks and Luxe Metallic Liquid Lipstick.

For lip glosses, I will recommend these affordable ranges – Streetwear Mega Shine Lip Gloss, Faces Go Chic Lip Gloss and Essence XXXL Longlasting Lipgloss.

5. Use Concealer And A Small Brush To Make The Edges Look Sharp

Unless you are going for the soul-eater lipstick look, you should conceal the edges of your lips after you have applied a dark lipstick shade. Use a small lip brush or a smudger brush to apply and blend concealer on the edges. It helps to give a clean, precise look to the lipstick. Just apply a tiny bit of concealer around your lips and carefully blend it with a brush. Dust some powder on top of the concealer, this will ensure that your lipstick doesn’t feather for long.

6. Carry It In Your Purse

I ALWAYS make the mistake of not carrying the lipstick I have on my lips that day with me in the handbag. And when my lipstick starts to fade after a couple of hours, or even after 6 hours, I regret not carrying it with me because the lipstick (no matter whether it’s a long-wearing lipstick or not) starts to look patchy, faded and uneven once I have eaten something.

So now, I have made a habit of carrying some essentials in a small pouch, the essentials include tissue papers (to wipe the existing lipstick), a lip balm for prepping and two lipsticks – one which I am wearing that day and my favourite Revlon Fabulous Fig because I love it a lot! I will suggest you girls to do the same. You may just carry a tinted lip balm and you will be sorted.
